Employment opportunities and job roles in the creative media sectors

There are several types of jobs that are available in any industry. Fixed term is a working pattern where working hours are planned out on a calendar for a year, this usually applies for full-time jobs.
These workers have a particular contract with the organisation they work for, this ends on the date that they complete their given task. Most big manager or main job roles use this working pattern type.

A part-time job is a job where you get a lot less hours then a full-time job. Part-time jobs only really get involved in work for half days they never really get a long shift that expands over 6-8 hours. This means that part-time jobs are much more flexible than full-time this makes them appeal to teens who are looking for jobs whilst attending education. It is also much easier to achieve a place as a part-time worker than a full-time one. This job type applies to people who want to start off in the industry as part-time jobs usually apply to the less important jobs an example being a runner or a grip.

Freelancing is when someone gets employed by different companies temporarily to achieve a job that the person has advertised. A freelancer does not work for a single company permanently like standard full-time jobs. This is a very popular job role in the media industry as lots of companies need certain tasks achieving where they will find freelancers. Anyone can become a freelancer you don't necessarily need any qualifications, just a skill that you have in the industry. Freelancing can potentially be the best paying you negotiate your own rates meaning you can potentially choose your own wage. The problem with being a freelancer is that finding your first few jobs at first can be very difficult.

Voluntary work is generally an unpaid job type and always is a small job not a big important one, this is because usually the smaller jobs are easier to do and the big jobs would be simply a bit ridiculous to do whilst not being paid. This is a great way to get involved in the media industry as you don't need any or much experience in the industry just to be interested in it as your job tasks will be simple and easy this usually means being a runner.

A casual worker is when you are not necessarily guaranteed work hours, instead you usually will get a rota where you might be listed down for certain days for a set amount of hours, the problem with this job type is that you don't get many hours meaning you won't earn as much money as a standard part-time job.

Creative jobs in the media industry the main one is being a film director, this is a dream job that most people who want to go into film aim for, a directors main job is the translate a script into a film shown on the screen. Directors have to use their creativity when thinking about characters with casting and how they will use the camera and sound to improve the film. Directors will work long intensive hours, they are willing to work as long as it takes to complete the film that they are set to make. Another creative job is the screenwriter, this involves using creativity to be able to write an interesting/compelling story for the movie they must ensure that there script will work well both on paper as well as on the screen, they must ensure dialogue is strong and natural for their actors and that the plot is strong. As a composer you must be able to tell a story with music, all music in movies should match the current state of the movie, tones and pace must match scenes well.

Editorial jobs involve film editors, there job is to convey information through correction of the movie, they must put the scenes together to ensure continuity, they must edit the movie to relate to the script, using the cinematographers shots wisely. Title designers must create titles that relate well to individual films, this means choosing apporpriate fonts and colour to match the films genre and mood. Also special effects editors much implement the needed effects to make the film seem realistic and how the director wants it to look.

Technical jobs in the media industry involve camera operators, sound mixing, boom operation, lighting department. Lighting is very important in a movie as it can completely change the visual message of the movie, they need to light the scene in such a way to match the mood that is given by the director this might mean working with working with different types of artificial light or natural light. Boom operators have the job of placing the microphone in the best possible place for actors so that they can be heard as best as possible without getting the microphone in the frame, they must also try to avoid not to distract the actors themselves. Camera operators have to follow the instructions of the director whilst making sure the camera uses the best possible settings for the scene, they also have the job of handling the camera using it for pans, handheld movements etc.

Theres also jobs in research which involves finding locations for film shoots, researching into transport for the production, cheapest and most efficient way to do it possible has to be looked into. Casting is also a research job that needs to be completed, research on specific actors needs to be done to look at the work they've produced and to see what actors would be best suited to certain roles.
