Music style mainly applies to the genre of the music, so the style of a rock song will be different to a pop song but the style of rock songs will all be quite similar. music styles contain use of colour, location, action, humour, editing, lighting all of these apply to the style of the video. Illustrative music means that the lyrics will influence the visuals in the video, the video will basically be guided by the lyrics examples of this is Riptide by Vance joy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uJ_1HMAGb4k.
Surrealism is often used in music videos this is when the story of the music video is more of a fictional story this includes when the video is set as a dream as an example Bastille's Pompeii. This is set as if it could be a dream and is definitely surreal. This is often used to make the video stand out more as it will appear a bit more unusual and different.
Interpretive music videos is when things are shown to represent a certain idea but are not a direct representation for example they might use an animal to represent a person. this often requires the audience to discover a deeper meaning of the music. https://vimeo.com/34869601.
Narrative music is basically just music that tells a story to the audience most music is narrative for example Eminem's "Stan" is narrative as it tells the story about "Stan" this song is also illustrative due to it being heavily linked to its lyrics. Pastiche or homage music is a music video that is basically a tribute to something for example might be tribute to a person or a film. Parodies are basically a mockery of a certain subject usually parodies are made to take the mick out of a certain song or artist but they can be done about actors, celebrities or movies.
This is a basic parody but one of the most well-known and one of the most hated ones made due to its awful vocals.
Techniques in music videos range very wide but the most common one is lip syncing this is used in pretty much every music video that you can watch, the actual singing will be recorded in a sound studio where it will be edited the video might contain the person actually singing but the audio will the paired with the edited sound from the studio. some video techniques include cutting to the beat this is a common favourite as it seems to give a very pleasing listening and viewing experience, it also seems to intensify those beats that it cuts on making them stand out better, another interesting camera technique are long takes or even 1 shot takes in the entire video this can really give the shock of how difficult it must of been to do with long takes however this does leave a few sacrifices that cutting can give you. green screen/blue screen is used to add in a different background to the video this is associated to music videos with bigger budgets, as low-budget videos would not be able to achieve good looking green screen.
This video by Little Mix shows film work that uses lots and lots of different cuts to help flow with the music watching this video you can see how effective this becomes. This video uses multi image where more than one image is displayed on the screen it is split into sectors.
This music video is completely different to the little mix one this video is only 1 cut itself, this can give the effect that as a viewer you are actually there witnessing the atmosphere yourself especially in this video as you are walking along with the band as if you are walking with them this is achieved because of one single shot also it gives the video a very in the moment feel things don't feel rehearsed it's certainly different.
